ABSTRACT: Due to the oil spill at sea, which has been taking place in different world scenarios, research has turned to remediation processes aimed at the degradation of this highly toxic and environmentally harmful waste. Hydrocarbons, the main contaminants, have specific characteristics and need adequate treatment to be discarded. The bioremediation process consists of the use of microorganisms to decompose contaminants of interest. The referred work carried out a bibliographic review, from the survey of publications on the subject and evaluated the different methods of remediation. The final considerations after the analysis carried out, pointed out bioremediation as the best process because it is a method that does not generate negative impacts on the environment after its application and, because it is a viable, low-cost treatment option that can be implemented in the field or in closed systems.
