Abstract

ABSTRACT: The present study deals with a common problem in urban areas and has evolved over the years, that is, the environmental degradation caused by the occupation process in environments with high susceptibility of mass movements. In this research the risks are verified with greater emphasis on the slopes located in urban areas, more specifically in the area formerly occupied by the former community of Espinhaço da Gata in the municipality of Viçosa - Alagoas. In the year 2010, a field survey was carried out to evaluate the evolution of the landslide on the aforementioned slope, as well as the survey of iconographic, cartographic material, satellite images and interviews with homeless residents. The movement on the ground was aggravated by a work carried out on a section of the railway that passes at the base of the slope, without prior knowledge of the area, regarding geomorphology, soil types, vegetation cover and unsuitable practices in recovering instability of the slope, thus causing the stability of the terrain to be broken. After nine years of the occurrence of the phenomenon, this article brings an update of the social, environmental and political situation, and, in this sense, makes possible a debate about the role of public power in the management of risk areas.
